How to convert MP4 to MP3
- Drag your videos into the box, or choose Browse files.
- Pick MP3 or WAV. For MP3, choose the bitrate.
- Select Extract audio.
- Download each audio file, or use Download all.
MP3 or WAV: which should you pick?
- MP3: small files that play on nearly every device, the right choice for most videos. Choose 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps as a good default, and 256 or 320 kbps for music.
- WAV: uncompressed sound with no quality loss, but files are many times larger. Choose it when you plan to edit the audio further.
Private and free
The audio is extracted in your browser. Your videos are not uploaded to ImgNexa, and there is no account or watermark.
Why convert MP4 to MP3
Sometimes the sound is the part you want: a lecture you would rather listen to on a walk, a song from a recorded performance, an interview for a transcript, or a voice message recorded as a video. Extracting the sound gives you a small audio file that plays in any music app and uses far less space than the video.
Good to know
- Extraction happens in your browser, so long videos need memory. On a phone, clips under about 30 minutes work best.
- The video must contain a sound track. A silent screen recording will produce an error.
- Only extract audio from videos you own or have permission to use. Copyright still applies to the content.
- Only MP4 files are accepted, up to 200 MB each.
Choosing between MP3 and WAV
MP3 is the practical choice for most people. The files are small, play on every phone and music app, and at a bitrate of 192 kbps or more speech and everyday music sound fine. WAV stores the sound without compression, so the file is many times larger, but there is no extra loss. That makes WAV useful if you will edit the audio further in a sound editor.
Remember that audio extracted from a video can only be as good as the sound that was recorded in it. A quiet or noisy recording stays quiet or noisy. If you only need the words from a lecture, interview or meeting, MP3 is almost always enough, and the smaller file is easier to share and store.
Frequently asked questions
Which video formats work?
Only MP4 files are accepted. A video in another format needs to be saved as MP4 before you add it.
Is there a size limit?
Each video can be up to 200 MB, and you can add up to 5 videos at a time.
Why does it say the audio could not be read?
The video may have no sound track, or your browser cannot open its format. Try an MP4 file, or another browser such as Chrome.
Are my videos uploaded to a server?
No. The sound is extracted in your browser and your files stay on your device.
Does converting reduce the sound quality?
WAV keeps the decoded sound as it is. MP3 is compressed, but at 192 kbps or higher most people cannot hear a difference for speech and everyday music.
Can I extract audio from a screen recording?
Yes, if the recording captured sound. A recording with no audio track has nothing to extract.
Why is the MP3 encoder downloaded?
MP3 encoding uses a small open-source script that is loaded only when you choose MP3. Your video itself is never uploaded.
Can I extract audio from a long video?
The tool works in your browser, so very long files need more memory. If a video is large, try a shorter clip or use a computer instead of a phone.
